Hi there
I'm wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction in incorporating My Place into a Grade 3 Inquiry Unit around the communities topic?

Any suggestions would be greatly received.

Thanks

Grade 4 students at Serpell Primary School in Victoria watched My Place-Series 1 during their library sessions.
Attached are some of the activities they did around each episode.
There are some great ideas in the attachment below.

Hi Steph,

I hope you found a timeline creator in time!

If not, this is an interesting article on using google docs as an open-source timeline creator:

http://trueatthetime.blogspot.com.au/2012/08/google-docs-as-online-timeline-creator.html

Would be a fun activity to get your students to look up the relevant dates and add them all to the same document.

Good luck!

Looking for a nice simple timeline for my year 6 class to cover ACARA Australia Federation and "identifying and developing a timeline of world unrest that contributed to migration in the 1900s (for example the World Wars, the Vietnam War, the war in the former Yugoslavia, the Tiananmen Square massacre, the war in Sudan)"

Anybody have one I can print out or even suggest how we could create an electronic one individually (to assess student learning) as my students all have laptops?

thanks
Steph

This is great! Have done something similiar to this- students created their own my place page using the same themes that Nadia uses in each of the pages she wrote. They added a photo of themsleves and a map.

How did you set up the webpages? I'm in Qld so was thinking of using EdStudio with my Year 6 laptop class - other suggestions?

I am about to complete my ATP with a yr 6/7 class and am using My Place as a basis for my literacy learning, as my mentor wants me to take a small group of 10 students and then do a collaborative learning for 46 kids. I am going to do an e-resource with the small group based on My Place and then link this with the literacy of the whole class by using the recount tree idea posted by another user, i really love the sharing of ideas and the way this book facilitates the engagement of students in learning.

A big welcome back My Place! The first episode of series 2 aired yesterday and is now available on iView.

"Despite one failed invention after another, young Henry knows in his heart that he's a brilliant inventor. Against the advice of his friend Franklin, Henry conducts his biggest experiment ever … but succeeds only in blowing up the local schoolhouse."

What are your thoughts on using this episode in the classroom?

Don't miss the highly anticipated second series of award winning My Place. Broadcast begins Sunday 26th June at 5pm on ABC3.

The second series continues its adaptation of My Place, the children's book written by Nadia Wheatley and illustrated by Donna Rawlins. This time we start in 1878, before travelling back through Australia's history to 'Before Time', each episode telling the story of the children who lived there. The series includes all characters from the book and introduces us to three new characters; Dan, Waruwi and Bunda.

The rich content of the book and television series is encapsulated in the My Place for Teachers website. This exciting source of educational materials is designed to support teachers in exploring issues and contexts presented in My Place, both book and TV series. Following the first broadcast on 26th June, My Place for Teachers will launch an exciting new range teaching materials from series 2! This includes another 39 clips, all with supporting teaching resources written for both History and English and tailored to the new Australian Curriculum.

Read the book, watch the series, and then explore the teaching resources on this website, developed through a partnership of the Australian Children's Television Foundation and Education Services Australia.

Note: Australian schools with a Screenrights licence maycopy the series and retain it in their school library.

This sounds like a great challenge! Was there one for 2011?

Thanks Simone. This has been a great event, enjoyed by all schools who have been fortunate enough to participate. Unfortunately we have been unable to host a challenge since the latest, held in November 2010, but be sure to watch this space for information about any new challenges or programs in 2011/12!
