I am about to complete my ATP with a yr 6/7 class and am using My Place as a basis for my literacy learning, as my mentor wants me to take a small group of 10 students and then do a collaborative learning for 46 kids. I am going to do an e-resource with the small group based on My Place and then link this with the literacy of the whole class by using the recount tree idea posted by another user, i really love the sharing of ideas and the way this book facilitates the engagement of students in learning.

Don't miss the highly anticipated second series of award winning My Place. Broadcast begins Sunday 26th June at 5pm on ABC3.
The second series continues its adaptation of My Place, the children's book written by Nadia Wheatley and illustrated by Donna Rawlins. This time we start in 1878, before travelling back through Australia's history to 'Before Time', each episode telling the story of the children who lived there. The series includes all characters from the book and introduces us to three new characters; Dan, Waruwi and Bunda.
The rich content of the book and television series is encapsulated in the My Place for Teachers website. This exciting source of educational materials is designed to support teachers in exploring issues and contexts presented in My Place, both book and TV series. Following the first broadcast on 26th June, My Place for Teachers will launch an exciting new range teaching materials from series 2! This includes another 39 clips, all with supporting teaching resources written for both History and English and tailored to the new Australian Curriculum.
Read the book, watch the series, and then explore the teaching resources on this website, developed through a partnership of the Australian Children's Television Foundation and Education Services Australia.
Note: Australian schools with a Screenrights licence maycopy the series and retain it in their school library.

Looking to engage your students in a creative & meaningful activity promoting gender equality in education, as well as take part in an initiative covering 46 countries in the region? Please join our drawing contest!
The 13 winning drawings will be featured on a cool UN calender and receive a certificate of achievement.
Partners of the United Nations Girls’ Education Initiative (UNGEI), East Asia and the Pacific (EAP) and South Asia (SA), are pleased to invite entries for the 3rd contest on promoting gender equality in education.
This year, you are welcome to submit drawings that will illustrate your thoughts on how girls’ education can help us all.
Awards
The 13 winning drawings will be featured in UNGEI (EAP and SA) “Gender in Education Calendar 2012,” which will be distributed widely throughout the Asia-Pacific region. The contest winners will receive official certificates of merit and a copy of the Calendar 2012. Click here to see previous calendars.
The winning drawings will also be posted on the organizers’ respective websites. Additionally, winning drawings and all other entries in the contest will be used by UNGEI partner agencies in their respective publications, presentations, websites and promotional and advocacy materials.
Who can participate?
The contest is open to all nationals and residents in Asia and the Pacific.
Contestants must be 18 years of age or under.
Girls and boys alike are encouraged to participate.

Thanks Simone. This has been a great event, enjoyed by all schools who have been fortunate enough to participate. Unfortunately we have been unable to host a challenge since the latest, held in November 2010, but be sure to watch this space for information about any new challenges or programs in 2011/12!

This is great! Have done something similiar to this- students created their own my place page using the same themes that Nadia uses in each of the pages she wrote. They added a photo of themsleves and a map.

What an interesting episode and what great boys depicting the struggles of family life in 1938. This opened discussion on how 'freedom' for children has changed over time - adventures on billy carts have been scaled down (helemets required) and many do not even know their neigbours.

The episode based on Colum's part of the story opens up so many possible avenues to explore themes and ideas with students...interviewing their own grandparents, discussing the sense of community in their own neighbourhood, the simple machines and significantly harder amounts of manual labour to complete households tasks - almost all done by women and some by children! ...and that's just for starters!

I love the epiosde of Sophia. It reminds me of the era I was a child. I feel it is a significant story of children who were expected to translate fior their parents.

My first 'My Place' experience as part of the BLAST pre-conference PD day at the ICT Innovation Centre on the Sunshine Coast. Enjoyed this episode immensely - lots of food for thought. Initial idea for a starting point - would be good to look at the classroom scene with the students and compare it with the classroom of today.

I have used the My Place series and resources after being introduced to this fantastic series at last year's Blast! conference. This is fantastic resource for teachers. I can't wait for the second series to come out so I can continue my own "My Place" journey

I have used 'My Place' with my year 6 class last year and found it to be an informative and interesting teaching resource that engaged my students on all levels. Well done ACTF for providing teachers with a learning tool that helps make learning interesting and engaging for all students.

If this episode is a work of 'faction' I wonder just how many 'Sofias' there were in the 1960's who deliberately sabotaged relationships by not translating accurately! I found it most intriguing (almost laughable), especially decoding the non-verbals (facial expressions) of the characters and wondering just what they were thinking!!

Was planning to teach about the 'apology' Kevin Rudd gave the aboriginal people next week, so finding this resource is excellent timing. Not to mention all the other fabulous clips/activities I can use throughout the year!
